DECASIA!

Okay I'm not going to write a ton today because I woke up and my wrist hurts a good bit so...not much typing today for me!

Personally I honestly thought the film Decasia was great.  I was a bit skeptical going into it, but the combination of film and sound was quite chilling.  It allowed my mind to wander in many interesting directions.  It was refreshing to not follow any sort of linear storyline.  I didn't really try very hard to determine one coherent message from the film at all.  I really just had to sit back and take it all in.  It was pretty crazy.

I would certainly watch it again.

  2. I would agree, chilling was definitely the word that came to mind. The footage of the children and the dancers struck me the most. The decaying film distorted the features of the people and added the kind of visual effects that we see in scary movies today. Overall maybe not the most enjoyable, but I would say quite eye-opening.

  3. I also agree that Decasia was enjoyable to watch. Its loosely cohesive narrative was refreshing and in general the film was definitely thought provoking. I highly recommend Jan Svankmajer's films. He often uses clay figures, pencil drawings, and other ordinary objects to create interesting images and scenes. In his short films especially, he also uses various montage techniques. Here is a link to a short film of his called: "Dimensions of Dialogue Part 1"

Hillary, I agree that the footage of the children walking through the nunnery was quite unsettling. The way the film had decomposed, and the accompanying soundtrack, gave the scene a very ominous feel.

  4. I agree, the sound was distracting for me, I felt as if I was being launched off into space, I felt the sound was overpowering but, the visuals were arranged in distinct ways.

  5. I'm sorry Kevin, but I'm going to have to disagree and say that the film was not enjoyable to watch at all. I agree with Marvanna. The sound was so distracting that I could barely focus on anything else. maybe we just have a difference in taste of art.

  6. The associative relationship of the imagery provided the mind some freedom to drift which may be liberating to some and terrifying to others. Hollywood keeps us locked into the story. That's a nice escape, but there are other ways. The sound in the Warch Campus Center Cinema apparently busted the sound barrier for some viewers during the screening!
